What makes Berlin Wall Memorial historically important?
The Berlin Wall Memorial (Gedenkstätte Berliner Mauer) along Bernauer Strasse preserves 1.4km of the original border fortifications, including inner/outer walls, death strip, watchtower, and Chapel of Reconciliation. The Documentation Center offers multimedia exhibits on the Wall's 28-year history (1961-1989), escape attempts, divided families, and the 140+ people killed trying to cross. This is the most authentic and moving Wall site, showing the brutal reality of division better than touristy Checkpoint Charlie.
