Founder & Travel Editor · Amsterdam, Netherlands
Who Daniel Is
Daniel left a career in documentary filmmaking to build Tour Guide after realising how hard it was to find reliable, non-sponsored travel advice online. He has visited over 60 countries and now writes immersive destination guides, curates walking itineraries, and reviews audio tour apps so travellers can explore with confidence.
At Tour Guide he sets the editorial standard for every destination we publish, chooses which places we cover, and does the final read on the facts a page stands or falls on — opening hours, admission prices, transit connections, and the historical context that gives a visit meaning. His name on a page is a commitment that the research behind it meets the bar described in our research methodology.
Areas of Expertise
Daniel's background is in research and storytelling rather than any single academic discipline. The topics he works in day to day, and the ones his byline speaks to, are:
- Destination research and fact-checking
- Walking-itinerary and self-guided tour design
- Audio-tour app reviews
- Cultural-heritage and UNESCO World Heritage sites
- Travel logistics and trip planning
- Documentary storytelling and long-form editing
He reviews audio-tour apps hands-on, designs the walking itineraries that anchor many of our city guides, and reads primary sources — tourism-board data, UNESCO dossiers, museum records — the way a documentary researcher checks a claim before it airs.
Firsthand Experience, Honestly Scoped
Tour Guide covers 49 countries, 201 cities, and 724 attractions. No single person has stood in every one of them, and we will never pretend otherwise. Daniel has travelled to more than 60 countries, so for the places he knows firsthand the guidance draws on direct experience; for everywhere else, his role is that of a researcher and editor who verifies each fact against authoritative sources before it is published.
Where a page reflects on-the-ground knowledge of a specific city, we say so by giving it a named local byline rather than implying Daniel walked every street himself. Our city contributors cover the places they know in person, and their work carries their own name. This keeps experience claims tied to the person who actually holds them.
Background
Before Tour Guide, Daniel worked in documentary filmmaking, where the discipline of sourcing and verifying every claim became second nature. He started the site after years of frustration with travel advice that was either sponsored, out of date, or written by someone who had clearly never checked. That frustration is still the editorial test he applies to every guide: would this hold up if a reader relied on it at the ticket desk?
Working With Our Contributors
Daniel edits alongside 2 named city contributors who byline the destinations they cover in person. Read more about how the team is organised on our about page.
